Young Post Club (YPC) – Frequently Asked Questions
Whether you are choosing a subscription, navigating our digital learning tools or tracking your reading progress, this page will help you find detailed answers so you can make the most of your learning journey.
Pro-Tip: We recommend watching the YPC Tutorial Video located in the main menu! This video answers many of the frequently asked questions in one go and will help you become a YPC pro in minutes.
1. Choosing the right publication
Q:
What are the differences between Posties, Young Post Spark and Young Post?

Our award-winning family of publications is carefully tailored to different reading proficiencies.

  • Posties: Designed for beginner readers, Posties brings the world to life through vibrant storytelling, interactive quizzes and foundational language-building. Our print newspaper works alongside Hong Kong’s primary school curriculum through themes like Scam Spotters and Super Science.
  • Young Post Spark: A stepping stone for intermediate readers that bridges the gap for those outgrowing Posties. Spark delivers engaging stories from Young Post but adapts them with extended literacy support and simplified questions to remove barriers to reading the news.
  • Young Post: Tailored for advanced readers, Young Post delivers real-world news with an authentic journalistic style to accelerate high-level English proficiency and prepare students for university entrance exams, such as Hong Kong’s Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE).
Q:
Do I need to follow the suggested age ranges for each publication?
Not at all. The age ranges provided on our subscription page are strictly for reference. We know that every student's English proficiency is unique. Younger students attending international schools might be fully capable of reading Young Post or Spark at an early age, while secondary school students looking to solidify their foundational English skills might find Posties to be the perfect starting point. We recommend using our website’s free articles and sample editions to choose a publication based on a student’s actual reading level.
2. Subscriptions, access and account management
Q:
What features can I access if I am an anonymous user, a registered user or a subscriber?
  • Anonymous users can browse the homepage and read up to 3 free articles per month but cannot access any of our platform’s learning tools.
  • Registered users (free account) also receive a limit of 3 free articles per month, but gain access to almost all of YPC’s powerful learning features to support their reading, such as our text-to-speech audio, reading quizzes and vocabulary words.
  • Digital-only paid subscribers can unlock unlimited online access to the specific publication(s) included in their purchased package, with access to all of YPC’s learning features.
  • Print + digital bundle subscribers receive physical newspaper deliveries, unlimited digital access and exclusive reading assessment opportunities – up to 5 attempts on the YPC Adaptive Assessment powered by the Lexile® Framework for Reading. This can be accessed via a shortcut on the main menu.
Q:
I am a paid subscriber. Why am I hitting a paywall when I click on certain articles?
Your subscription grants you unlimited digital access to the publication package you purchased. If you are a Posties subscriber, you have unlimited access to all Posties content. However, for articles belonging to Young Post or Young Post Spark, your account defaults to "Registered User" status. This means you will encounter our paywall and will only be able to view 3 free articles per month from those other publications.
Q:
How do I manage my subscription and update my profile?

You can manage everything through "My Account" found in the main menu.

  • Subscription details: Check your current subscription entitlements, active period and renewal date.
  • Profile editing: Update your personal information at any time, including your profile icon, password, nickname, first name, last name, birthday, gender, email and school name.
Q:
How do I cancel my subscription and turn off auto-renewal?

How you cancel your subscription depends on where you originally purchased it:

For subscriptions purchased directly via the Young Post Club website: If you would like to stop the auto-renewal function after your first-year subscription, please send us an official cancellation request via email ([email protected]) at least 72 working hours before your current subscription ends. After receiving your request, the YPC Team will reply with a step-by-step guide on how to process your cancellation.

Please note: If we do not receive an official cancellation request at least 72 hours before your term ends, the subscription will automatically renew, and no refunds will be given for any incurred charges.

For subscriptions purchased via In-App Purchase (Apple App Store / Google Play): If you subscribed through the Young Post Club app via Apple or Google, your billing is managed directly by those platforms. To avoid auto-renewal, you must cancel the subscription directly through your Apple Account or Google Account settings. Emailing the YPC team will not cancel a subscription made through these app stores, and you will need to comply with the specific cancellation rules of the platform you used.

Subscription orders are subject to confirmation by South China Morning Post Publishers Limited. Please visit www.scmp.com/terms-conditions for full details. In the event of any disputes, SCMPP reserves the right of final decision. For our Personal Information Collection Statement, please visit www.scmp.com/privacy-policy.

3. Delivery schedules and summer holidays
Q:
What day of the week will I receive my print newspaper?
Print editions are published every Monday. However, please note that delivery times depend on the address provided. If Hongkong Post considers your address to be a remote area (偏遠地區), you may receive your paper on Tuesday or even Wednesday.
Q:
Will I receive newspapers during public holidays or school breaks?

Delivery schedules during school breaks depend on which publication you are subscribed to.

  • Posties: Designed to keep primary school students engaged year-round, Posties does not pause for school holidays! You will receive your issues as normal throughout the year. The only time a Posties paper will not be delivered is when Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year’s or the first day of Lunar New Year lands on a Monday.
  • Young Post and Young Post Spark (Standard Editions): Because these publications follow the secondary school calendar, standard 24-page weekday editions are paused during all major school breaks (Christmas, Lunar New Year, Easter and July to August).
  • Young Post Weekend (Summer Bonus): Although standard Young Post and Spark editions pause during the summer, Print + Digital subscribers will automatically receive a special 8-page Young Post Weekend edition every Monday throughout July and August (up to 9 issues) to keep you entertained and inspired all summer long.
5. Interactive tools: vocabulary challenges
Q:
How do I find, save and learn vocabulary words?
Spot a new word while reading? Save it to learn it! You can find articles with hand-picked vocabulary words by opening the main menu and clicking the "Vocabulary" section. You can track the words you have saved and learned in the "My Vocabulary Builder" page.
Q:
How does the Vocabulary Challenge work?
  • Save 3 words: Once you save at least 3 words, a reminder box will invite you to try your personalised Vocabulary Challenge. Each challenge tests up to 5 randomly selected words from your saved list.
  • Question formats: Challenges feature 4 question types: Read & Fill, Define the Word, Complete the Word and Spot the Word. Questions are mostly multiple-choice, except for "Complete the Word", which requires picking specific characters to spell a word correctly.
  • Results: If you miss a few questions, you get 1 chance to retake the challenge. If you pass, the words move to your permanent "Learned" list!
  • Resuming: If you accidentally close a challenge, you can resume it anytime within the same day.
  • Note: Phrases with more than one word currently cannot be used for the Vocabulary Challenge. We are enhancing this feature soon!
6. YPC Adaptive Assessment
Q:
What is the Lexile® Reading Measure?

The Lexile® Framework for Reading is a globally recognised scale backed by more than 40 years of educational research. Similar to IELTS or CEFR, it measures reading ability and identifies your "Optimal Reading Range" to help you choose texts that offer the ideal level of challenge.

How US students perform on the Lexile® assessment

Q:
What makes this assessment "adaptive"?
Unlike traditional exams, our assessment adjusts question difficulty in real time based on your answers. This precision creates a shorter, student-friendly test that reduces fatigue while generating accurate data.
Q:
How many attempts do I get, and how often should I take it?
  • Attempts and expiry date: Print + Digital Bundle subscribers receive up to 5 attempts valid until 31 August 2027. Expired or incomplete attempts cannot be restored or compensated.
  • Recommended pace: We recommend taking the test 3 times a year (at the beginning, middle and end of the school year), leaving 2 backup attempts.
  • Cool-down period: To accurately measure actual reading growth, a mandatory 45-day cool-down period is required between attempts.
7. Assessment quick set-up and rules
Q:
Can I take the assessment on a mobile device?
No. For the best, distraction-free experience, mobile devices are not supported. Please use a laptop, desktop computer or tablet.
Q:
What is the "Quick Set-Up"?

Before you begin your first assessment, you must complete a mandatory, one-time set-up. During this step, you will enter your full name (which will be printed on your certificate exactly as it is typed) and explain your English learning background (such as whether you are a native speaker and your current grade level).

IMPORTANT: Please treat this step seriously and fill in your information carefully. The details you provide cannot be changed later. The system relies on these exact answers to determine the most suitable starting questions for your reading level, which directly affects your final score. If you are unsure how to answer the questions, please ask a parent, teacher or guardian for help.

Q:
Can parents, educators or adults take the YPC Adaptive Assessment?
We advise against it. This assessment is designed for K-12 students (primary and secondary school pupils). During the mandatory Quick Set-Up, the highest available option for the "What grade are you in?" question is Secondary 6 / Year 13 / Grade 12. Because our system uses the grade you select to calculate your US norm comparison, adults or educators who are forced to select a K-12 grade will receive skewed results that do not accurately reflect their true reading capability.
Q:
What are the key rules during the test?
  • Duration and questions: The test features 15 to 36 multiple-choice questions and takes about 20 to 50 minutes.
  • Move forward only: You cannot go back to change a previous answer.
  • Strict 50-minute timer: Once you press "START", a 50-minute timer begins (with warnings when you have 15 and 5 minutes remaining). If you lose connection or need a break, you can resume within the 50 minutes.
  • Timeout rule: If the 50 minutes run out before you finish, the test ends automatically. You will not receive a score or certificate for that attempt.
  • Audio: Plug in headphones for audio questions
  • Honesty: Do not use dictionaries, the internet or AI. Do not ask others for help.
8. Understanding assessment dashboard flashcards
Q:
How do I use the assessment hub, and how do I know when I can take my next assessment?

Your assessment hub features 4 status cards:

  • "New assessment ready!": Your test is unlocked. Click "START" to begin.
  • "Pause": Displays your remaining time to complete the assessment. Click "RESUME YOUR TEST" if you paused your session.
  • "Taken on [Date]": This shows your assessment results! It displays your official Lexile® Reading Measure (e.g., BR1300L) and certificate download link.
  • "Expired": Indicates the 50-minute timer ran out before completion. No score or certificate is available.
9. Gamification: points, badges, goals and leaderboards
Q:
How do I earn points for reading and quizzes?
  • Reading: At the bottom of every article, a completion button will activate after you read the story. Click it to get 10 points!
  • Quizzes: Use the “Quizzes” section of the main menu to find the stories that come with questions. You score 10 points for every correct response for the multiple-choice and short-answer questions, and 10 points for every long answer attempt. Bonus: Finishing a quiz automatically gives you your reading points, too.
Q:
What is a "learning streak" and how does it work with my weekly reading goals?
  • Weekly goal setting: Choose a weekly milestone that challenges you. You can change your personalised weekly goal at any time in the "My Journey" page (via the main menu), and the new target will kick in the following Monday.
  • Building a streak: Every time you reach your weekly goal, your "Weekly Streak" increases by 1, and the calendar in “My Journey” becomes green.
  • Keep it going: If you miss your weekly goal, your streak will drop back down to zero, so keep up your good reading habits!
Q:
How do I check the leaderboard and track my progress?

"My Journey" is your personal command centre. Here, you can check your total points, collected badges and learning progress. Climb the leaderboard to compete with school peers based on your learning streaks or points earned.

Q:
How do I submit my writing to earn the Star Writer badge?

Find submission opportunities in the main menu under sections like Posties’ "Ha-Ha-Happenings" and “Your Say”, or Young Post and Spark’s “Top 10” and "Letters to the Editor". Your work might even be published in our newspaper!

10. Notifications and technical troubleshooting
Q:
How will I know if I have assignments or updates?

Keep a close eye on the notifications button. Your reading assistant will send you warm reminders to complete your weekly goals. If you are a school subscriber, your teacher can also send you important notifications reminding you to complete learning tasks before the deadline.

Q:
I am having trouble logging into my account. What should I do?

If you are unable to access your YPC account, please try these troubleshooting steps.

  • Check your subscription status: Ensure you are logging in with the exact email address used to purchase or register your subscription.
  • Reset your password: Click the "Forgot Password" link on the login screen. Check your spam/junk folder if you do not see the email within 5 minutes.
  • Clear your browser cache: Outdated browser data can cause login loops. Clear your cache and cookies, or try logging in using a private browsing mode.
  • Update your app: Ensure you have downloaded the latest version of the Young Post Club app from the App Store or Google Play.
  • Contact our support team: If you are still experiencing issues, please contact our support team with a screenshot of any error messages you are receiving.
