It’s totally turtle time: why red-eared sliders make for great pets

Red-eared sliders are a type of turtle that make great pets. They are intriguing creatures to watch, and we can learn a lot about the natural world through them.

These turtles are active and playful – watch them dig in the sand, swim, sunbathe and explore. They also communicate using body language and by making sounds that they sense through vibrations.

Red-eared sliders are easy to take care of. They do not need a lot of attention, but pet owners should give them a clean tank that holds at least 75 litres and has space for water and land. You also need a good water filter to keep it clean.

Red-eared sliders require a balanced diet of leafy green vegetables, small insects, tiny shrimp, and pellets designed for turtles.

This reptile is also cold-blooded, so they need a heat lamp to stay warm.

Red-eared sliders are usually gentle, but be careful when you handle them as they bite if they feel scared.

After touching them, make sure to wash your hands. They swim in the same water they poop in, and their faeces can have germs, such as salmonella, that can make you sick.

Red-eared sliders can live for many years if we take good care of them and make sure they have a clean home.
