A man was attacked by a 4.6-metre-long crocodile in Queensland, in northern Australia. He fought it off by sticking his fingers in its eyes.

The man was spear-fishing at Archer Point near Cooktown when he was attacked by the giant reptile.

"It bit him three times and dragged him to the bottom of the water," says Valerie Noble from the Queensland Ambulance Service.

"He managed to stick his fingers in the crocodile's eyes many times and escape before swimming towards the shore."

The man suffered injuries to his head, abdomen and legs, and he was taken to Cairns Hospital by helicopter. He is now doing OK and is in good spirits.

"He's an extremely lucky man. Not many people would live to tell a story like that," says Valerie.

A spokesman for the Queensland Department of Environment says that the incident will be investigated by wildlife officers, who will try to find out if the crocodile is still in the area.

"Archer Point is known as croc country," he says. "Remember, you are responsible for your own safety in croc country!"
