A young man in the US state of Ohio was stung thousands of times after accidentally disturbing a bee nest. It happened while he was cutting some tree branches.

Austin Bellamy had climbed a lemon tree on Saturday and was trimming its branches when he cut into a nest of African killer bees.

His mother says Austin was stung over 20,000 times, and he had to be placed on a ventilator. A ventilator is a machine in hospital which helps people breathe.

Austin's grandparents, Phyllis and Dustin, were watching him work on the tree and saw him being attacked by bees.

"When he started cutting them, that's when the bees came out, and he tried to anchor himself down, and he couldn't," Phyllis says.

"He was hollering, 'Help! Help me! Help!'" she says. "I couldn't get to him because I was surrounded by bees."

Austin was taken to a hospital in Corryville by a medical helicopter.

His mother says Austin also swallowed around 30 bees during the attack.

"So he had bees inside of him, and they sucked bees out of him until Sunday morning," she says.

A fundraiser was started to help pay for Austin's medical bills. It already reached its target. He is feeling better now.

There is a lesson here. Bees are very important, and our planet needs them. But if you find a bees' nest, leave it alone!
