In December, a struggling secondary school student in China told the police about unlicensed after-school tutoring classes he was forced to attend.
He told police: “I am under a lot of stress. I don’t want to attend those classes any more.”
He said he was ranked eighth in his class, and his parents wanted him to do even better.
In the surveillance video that went viral, the police officers try to comfort the teen and help him with his maths homework.
Private tutoring is banned in China, but parents who fear their children will be left behind in a highly competitive academic environment now pay “underground” tutors.
The boy’s story has become an online sensation, with many feeling sympathy for him. “Why do parents force their kids so much?” said one online observer.
