What brings Hongkongers together to play squash, run around the city’s famous spots in red and green clothes and compete in a cooking contest?
These are activities in the annual Operation Santa Claus (OSC) fundraising event.
Starting in the 1960s, RTHK presenters began doing fun charity events to raise money for kids in need. In 1988, RTHK and the South China Morning Post brought this initiative back. Since then, it has become one of the best-known and most trusted charity campaigns in Hong Kong.
This year, it aims to raise at least HK$11 million (US$1.4 million).
Hong Kong still has many problems, such as teenagers facing mental health issues and children with rare diseases.
Every year, the fundraising drive aims to support impactful charities, especially those that do not have access to large budgets or government money.
Donations will support 13 projects, including those that provide healthcare and job assistance to families affected by workplace injuries. They will help young people and those from ethnic minority groups learn about mental health and financial literacy. They will also bring together older people and kids with special needs.
