Every weekend during winter, Roccaraso, a small town nestled in the mountains of central Italy, is filled with day trippers. Its small slopes are packed with people seeking some snow fun.
But the visitors have caused conflicts with local people, highlighting the challenges mountain resorts face in handling increasing numbers of tourists amid less snowfall.
Alto Sangro, a ski resort near Roccaraso, boasts more than 100km of slopes going up to 2,100 metres, which draw 500,000 people a year. There, many skiers complain that day trippers are more interested in sunbathing than skiing.
Last year, there was a lot of tension when more than 10,000 people showed up in just one day after a TikTok influencer named Rita Di Crescenzo told other people from Naples to come visit.
Since then, the authorities have set limits on how many buses can come, with a maximum of 50 on a recent Sunday.
