People in the Cuban capital of Havana are learning to cycle as petrol becomes harder to find in the country after the US took over Venezuela’s oil exports.
Venezuela was the main supplier of oil to Cuba until the US captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in January.
Fuel shipments to Cuba from Mexico also halted recently, after the US threatened tariffs on countries supplying oil to Cuba. The UN has warned of the potential for humanitarian “collapse” if Cuba’s supplies are not restored. A panel of UN human rights experts has said the US fuel blockade violates international law.
For Gabriela Barbon, 23, rising transport costs persuaded her to get on a bike for the first time.
“Riding a bike is no longer just a hobby … It’s a necessity,” she said at a training session hosted by a local group.
