Mexico's endangered axolotl salamander has captured the attention of scientists.
Axolotls have an impressive ability to heal themselves. For decades, scientists have marvelled at how the axolotl can regrow lost limbs, and even regrow its heart and brain.
"They are one of the few animals that can regenerate their skin, muscles, bones, blood vessels, nerves, heart and brain," says Fernando Gual, conservation manager at a zoo in Mexico City.
Scientists have discovered its ability to breathe with both lungs and gills. It can also absorb oxygen through its skin.
The animal is native only to Mexico. It is dwindling in the wild because of threats to its natural habitat.
