Scientists have found evidence that "gravitational waves" – ripples in the fabric of space-time – are everywhere in the universe. They are creating a cosmic background noise.
The new findings show that space is filled with these gravitational waves. They seem to come mainly from pairs of supermassive black holes. The motion of these black holes and other massive objects cause the gravitational waves.
"The gravitational waves stretch and compress space-time itself as they travel through the universe," says astrophysicist Jeff Hazboun.
Astronomers usually rely on studying light to learn more about the cosmos. Now, gravitational waves give us a different way to examine the universe.
