Make a friend by being a friend

It’s okay to feel nervous about making new friends. Don’t be afraid to take the first step! Photo: Shutterstock

Starting a new school year can be both exciting and scary, especially when it comes to making friends. It might be hard to start talking to someone we don’t know, but it can be fun to get along with a new buddy.

Don’t worry – we’ve got some tips and activities to help you make new friends.

First impressions are key! Greeting others with a smile on your face always helps break the ice.

Try asking questions and listening to what your classmates say. You can ask about their hobbies: “What games do you like to play? Do you like any sports? Are there any books you recommend?” Then, share a fun fact about yourself in return.

It is also important to be kind and supportive. Give your classmates a helping hand whenever they need it, even if it is just a small gesture. Kindness goes a long way in making friends. When you are kind to others, you show them how to be kind, too.

Friends are a big part of life because they give us support and help us grow. Don’t be afraid to make the first move by talking to someone new. Good luck!

Materials

  • cardstock paper

  • scissors

  • markers

  • colouring pencils or crayons

  • glue

  • recycled envelopes

Instructions

1. Write your name in large letters in the middle of the cardstock paper. Decorate it with drawings, symbols and words that represent your interests, hobbies, favourite foods and family members.

2. Then, take a pencil and divide the paper into six sections. You can add half-circles to the edges of some sections so they look like puzzle pieces.

3. Use scissors to cut your puzzle pieces, and put them in an envelope.

4. Pair up with another classmate, and exchange envelopes.

5. Remove the puzzle pieces from the envelope you received, and put the puzzle together.

6. Once the puzzles are completed, ask your partner about their interests. Then, present your partner’s interests to the class.

7. After the activity, approach someone with similar interests or hobbies and make a new friend.

Activity 2: Compliment cards
