Difficulty: Explorer (Level 1)
Some journalists travel to different countries to report on important news there. They update us on what is happening outside our communities.
Reading international news helps us understand different cultures. We can also learn about issues that affect other parts of the globe. For example, 2024 is a big year for elections around the world. More than 60 national elections will be happening and affecting over 4 billion people.
But reporters aren’t the only ones telling you about these events. For newspapers, editors check the stories to make sure there are no mistakes. Photographers go around capturing what is happening with their cameras. Designers put the stories and photos together to create the final newspaper.

Work in groups to create a newspaper. Each person can take different roles: reporter, editor, designer or photographer. Try to have at least two reporters and one editor.
-
As a team, brainstorm two stories to write about. One will go on the cover page, and the other will be on the second page. For example, you can write about a school event: a sports game, a performance or a big exam day. You can also interview an interesting person at your school.
-
After choosing your news stories, decide which people you need to interview and think of questions to ask them. The reporters can take notes of their answers. The photographer will take photos during the interview or draw a small picture of the scene.
-
The designer should start working on the newspaper. At the top of the cover, write the name of your newspaper in big letters. Add the date in smaller letters below the name.
-
Next, add the text and pictures for the first story below the newspaper name. On the back page, include the second story with photos or drawings. At the bottom of the back page, give credit to everyone who helped with the newspaper. On each story, don’t forget to add a headline and the author’s name.
-
The editor should go through the news stories to make sure there are no mistakes.
-
When your team is done, present your newspaper to your classmates and family members.
