A big part of creativity involves using your imagination. There are plenty of ways to use your imagination in the real world.

You have definitely watched a film or read a book. The creators of these works used their imagination to bring these stories to life. They think creatively to build a world and story that makes us feel different emotions.

Many jobs require you to use your imagination. Teachers think of creative ways to help students learn. Scientists must be creative when asking questions and finding answers about the world.

Learning and trying new things is a great way to train your imagination. What activities help you use your creativity?

Finish my your story

Materials

  • blank sheets of lined writing paper

  • pens or pencils

  • a timer

Instructions

  1. You’ll need at least one other person for this activity, but it can work with up to five other people. Each person will need their own sheet of paper and a pen or pencil.

  2. For the first round, each person will spend one minute writing the start of a story. Use the timer to keep track of time. You can start by setting the scene. Where does the story take place? Who is the main character?

  3. After one minute, pass your paper to the person on your right. Start the one-minute timer again. Read the story as written so far. Then, continue the story by writing your own ideas.

  4. Continue passing the papers around until you get your own story back. You could also end the activity when you feel like the story is complete.

  5. Read your stories out loud. Which one was the silliest? Which was the most exciting?

Cloud drawings

Materials

  • pen and paper

  • a friend

Instructions

  1. Go outside with your friend and find a place to look up and watch the clouds.

  2. Find clouds shaped like something else, such as an animal or car. Then, draw that cloud on the paper.

  3. Once you draw about 10 clouds that look like something, swap papers with your friend. See if you can identify what each cloud drawing represents!
