Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a book series written and illustrated by Jeff Kenny. It is about an American boy called Greg Heffley and his life during his first year of middle school.

In the first book, Greg devises schemes to become popular but constantly messes up because he does not care about honesty.

Greg looks down on Rowley Jefferson, “technically” his best friend, because he does not understand Greg’s need to be popular. Greg plays all sorts of pranks on Rowley. At one point, Rowley stops being friends with Greg because he terrorises the kindergarteners, but Rowley gets the blame.

Greg is unhappy when Rowley becomes popular. They argue and almost fight until bullies force Rowley to eat mouldy cheese from the basketball court. Later, when people ask what happened to the cheese, Greg feels sorry for his friend and says he threw it away. All his classmates avoid him, but at least the pair becomes friends again.

The handwriting and funny drawings make me feel like I am reading a real diary. I hope my middle school can be better than Greg’s and that there won’t be any mouldy cheese lying around.
