I went to the show, Kung Fu Artistry: Bruce Lee’s No Way As Way, at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. It was a production from the Hong Kong Dance Company. The show performed Lee’s achievements in film and martial arts. It paid tribute to him on the 85th anniversary of his birth.
Each act in the show was about a different moment of Lee’s journey, from how he started learning martial arts to his career in cinema. The show emphasised Lee’s philosophy: formless like water. This means that, like water, we can adapt to our environment without putting limits on ourselves – we change according to the situation while still maintaining a strong core.
The stage design was remarkable, and the setting could change in seconds. The stage was deep, so while the main performance was at the front, another act could be at the back. This created a feeling that two things were happening at once. A live band was wheeled onstage to perform music.
It made a powerful impact on the audience when the dancers took their nunchucks out to perform. The combination of martial arts, dance and music created an astounding and memorable effect.
My favourite part was when all the performers went onstage to do martial arts and swing their nunchucks. I was inspired, and I am now learning how to use nunchucks. Hopefully, I don’t smash anything.
