Read the following text and answer the quiz below.
[1] During the winter months, it is all about keeping the heat in and the cold out. In many countries, it is common to use heating devices and candles. These are effective but can be a serious fire hazard, especially with a four-legged friend running around. Here are some tips from the American Kennel Club to help prevent home fires and keep dogs safe.
[2] Never leave an open flame unattended. Your pup is naturally curious. Leaving them unattended with things like cooking appliances, candles or fireplaces is extremely dangerous. Always make sure any open flame or heat source is thoroughly cooled and extinguished before leaving your home. You could always try flameless candles. They look just as good but have no risk of catching fire.
[3] Keep up with smoke detectors. Having smoke detectors installed in your home is a great step. Always make sure to test them once a month and replace the batteries annually. Additionally, make sure to keep fire extinguishers in your home in places that are easily accessible.
[4] Be mindful of stove knobs. The stove is a common appliance involved in accidental house fires started by dogs. Some stove knobs just need to be pressed to be turned on, which can be easily done by pets leaning or jumping. Be sure to remove stove knobs or protect them with covers before leaving the house.
[5] Keep dog gear near exits. It is a good idea to keep your pup’s collar on at all times. Keep your leashes in an accessible place in case firefighters need to rescue your dogs in an emergency. When you leave your dogs home alone, keep them near a room with an exit so they can be easily found.
[6] Place a pet alert decal on your home’s window or door. It is a good idea to write down the number of dogs inside your home and attach the cling to a front-facing window or door. This information can be critical in saving time when locating your pets. These decals can be made or found at your local pet store.
[7] Keep puppies secure. With young puppies, it is important to keep them away from potential fire-starting hazards when you are not home. There are many options for safe, secure and comfortable crates and gates, so if you can’t always keep an eye on them or you must leave them home alone, opt for these.
