HK's Occupy leaders granted bail and will learn of sentences in two weeks

All nine Occupy leaders were on Tuesday convicted of at least one charge related to public nuisance.

All nine pro-democracy leaders found guilty for their roles in Hong Kong’s 2014 Occupy movement have been granted bail and will find out their sentences in two weeks.

Judge Johnny Chan Jong-herng adjourned court until April 24 just before noon on Wednesday after hearing mitigation from all nine leaders, who were a day earlier convicted of at least one charge related to public nuisance.

They were the three founders of the Occupy movement – academics Benny Tai Yiu-ting, Dr Chan Kin-man and Reverend Chu Yiu-ming – alongside lawmakers Shiu Ka-chun and Tanya Chan, former lawmaker Lee Wing-tat and young activists Tommy Cheung Sau-yin, Raphael Wong Ho-ming and Eason Chung Yiu-wa.

While all defence lawyers asked West Kowloon Court to consider community service as a punishment, Judge Chan sought a report to study its possibility only for Cheung, meaning he closed the door on that option for the others.
