In shows and films, famous historical people in ancient China are often shown wearing make-up.
But even everyday people back then wore make-up.
A Chinese study explored how people in the middle and upper classes used cosmetics during the Tang dynasty (618-907). The researchers found that make-up was a fun part of daily life for those who could afford it.
The researchers studied the tombs of thousands of wealthy non-elites. They were buried in a complex in Xian, which was the capital of the Tang dynasty. The scientists found that many cosmetics from this time were made from animal fat and vegetable oil.
Animal fat was used to moisturise the skin. Over time, vegetable oil was added to make moisturisers easier to apply. The use of vegetable oil in newer tombs showed how make-up improved.
