Difficulty: Challenger (Level 2)
If you are a kid, you might not think reading the news is important. However, Jarrod Watt, a journalism professor at Baptist University, suggests that it can be very beneficial for your development.
Learn about the world
“The most important thing is just starting to learn about the different cities and countries around the world,” Watt explained.
“You’ll understand how the world is connected and how it’s different. It’s basic knowledge that everyone should know.”
Reading the news can also spark your curiosity about the world.
“If you read about a volcano in Italy or a funny animal called a quokka in Australia, that’s going to make you want to find out more,” Watt added.
You might start asking questions like “How did this place get its name?” or “How did this place become the way it is?”

Stronger communication skills
But it’s not just about learning facts. Reading the news can also help improve the way you think and communicate.
“When you read the news and discuss it with your parents, teachers, or friends, it helps develop your ability to process information critically and express your thoughts clearly,” Watt told us.
Watt believes that regularly reading news designed for young people, like Posties, can give you a big advantage as you grow older.
“Knowledge is power,” he said.
“The more you read and learn about the world, the more confident you’ll be to talk about different topics. This can even help with leadership skills down the line.”
So, if you are a kid who is curious about the world, don’t hesitate to start reading the news. The more you read, the more you understand – and the more prepared you will be for the future.
