In China, experts are worried that a popular plastic toy knife nicknamed the “Carrot Knife” could encourage violence.
The toy is popular with young children, and some use it to relieve stress. They usually play with it by holding it, shaking it until the blade falls out, and then pretending to stab each other with the knife.
A shop assistant in Guangzhou said the toy would be safe for children over three years old. “It is not dangerous at all ... It is made of plastic,” she said.
Yang Sifan, a professor of education in China, said the toy could hurt kids, especially if someone threw it with force.
He also said it could have a negative impact on children’s mental health. “Holding the toy knife to do the moves of stabbing or jabbing might ... [influence kids to use] the real knife to do the same action,” Yang said.
