Hong Kong primary school pupils will have a new science subject starting in September 2025.
According to a draft curriculum, the new subject will “develop the country through science education”. This science subject and a separate humanities subject will replace general studies.
The science subject also hopes to deepen STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths), match with the secondary school curriculum, and support students in research, innovation and technology.
The new subject has 15 themes under four areas, such as “matter, energy and change”. Under the plan, the science subject will make up less than seven per cent of total lesson hours.
A general studies teacher surnamed Leung* said, “If it’s fun and manageable, like doing science experiments, I think students might prefer taking science over other subjects.” But she worries the new subject will be a lot of work for teachers.
Chris Fung Ka-chun is the principal of Sai Kung Sung Tsun Catholic School (Primary Section). He noted that the new subject could “sow seeds” about why technology and innovation are key.
