Residents of Haiti’s capital, which is troubled by gang violence, experienced a temporary break from their harsh realities when the PapJazz festival brought joy to music fans earlier this month.

The celebration was postponed in 2022 and moved to the northern city of Cap-Haitien the next year due to security concerns. It returned to Port-au-Prince last year but was held in a shorter format.

Local artists created an exciting atmosphere with jazz, Haitian “rara” carnival music, rap and slam poetry.

Organisers could not host foreign performers because the airport has been closed since November due to gang violence.

Criminal gangs in Haiti have been blamed for murders, looting and kidnappings.

Their growth has been fuelled by ongoing political instability in the country.

Violence has escalated since mid-February in the poorest nation in the Americas, creating a humanitarian crisis.

Answer: a music celebration featuring jazz and other local genres
