Nigeria’s ‘Nollywood’ film industry embraces free options like YouTube

The film Love in Every Word, by Nigerian filmmaker Omoni Oboli, has gained more than 20 million views on YouTube in the first three months of this year, similar to other Nollywood films.

Nollywood, Nigeria’s large film industry, produces around 50 movies weekly. It is the second most productive film industry globally, following India’s Bollywood.

It points to a shifting pattern as Nigerians grapple with an economic crisis.

In West Africa, where many view movie tickets as a luxury, both consumers and filmmakers are turning to YouTube and other more affordable options.

Filmmaker and co-founder of iBAKATV YouTube Channel Kazeem Adeoti said the number of full-length movies on YouTube has grown tremendously.

Several top actors even distribute their films directly to consumers via YouTube.

Income from YouTube depends on factors such as watch time, audience engagement, copyright ownership and viewers’ location.
