Egypt has officially opened the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). Described as the world’s largest archaeological museum, it holds some 100,000 artefacts covering 7,000 years. The country hopes the establishment will attract tourists and help improve its struggling economy.
The new museum is huge, spanning 500,000 square metres. It is located on a hill overlooking the Great Pyramid of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
At its opening, the audience watched a dazzling display of lights and music, with the pyramids towering before them. Performers in fancy costumes played traditional music while a laser show brightened the evening sky.
The museum’s most anticipated exhibit is a collection of all 5,500 items from King Tutankhamun’s tomb.
It will be the first time they will all be displayed in full since the ancient Egyptian pharaoh’s tomb was discovered in 1922 by archaeologist Howard Carter.
