The Hong Kong government has announced a fund to help schools introduce artificial intelligence (AI) into classrooms.

Public primary and secondary schools that apply will each receive HK$500,000. In total, authorities have set aside around HK$500 million for the three-year programme.

Schools that receive the money can subscribe to AI tools and equipment as long as they use AI in at least three subjects. Interested schools, including special needs and direct funding institutions, must send in an application form by February this year.

“Successful applicants will receive one-off funding of HK$500,000,” Jeff Sze Chun-fai said. Sze is the undersecretary for education. He is also the chairman of the Steering Committee on Digital Education.

The committee was started in January last year to suggest ways to improve digital education in the city.

The three-year programme will start this school year. Approved schools will receive the funding by June 30 and can use it until August 2028.

In his speech last year, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu promised to work harder to support digital education in primary and secondary schools.
