In Afghanistan, about 12,000 students affected by the war with Pakistan need safe spaces to learn, said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in a report last month.
Hundreds of Afghan civilians were killed before China brokered talks that halted most of the fighting. Pakistan is accusing Afghanistan of harbouring militants, who have carried out deadly attacks in Pakistan. Afghan officials deny the allegation.
More than 94,000 Afghans have been displaced by the war. Thousands of them have settled along the banks of the Kunar River, living in makeshift tents.
Nearby schools are full, but officials are trying to find solutions, said Najibullah Hanif, Kunar’s information chief.
Mohammad Amin Shakir, 40, was a school principal before being displaced to a tent.
“Students ... are roaming here in dirt and sand. They are completely deprived of education here,” he said.
