Thousands of ecstatic football fans escorted Cabo Verde’s Blue Sharks through the streets of Praia, the capital city, for a celebratory parade following their slender defeat by Argentina in one of the World Cup’s most surprising matches.

Fans carried the team through the city’s main districts.

The Sharks capped their return with a visit to Cabo Verde’s presidential palace. President Jose Maria Neves declared that “Argentina won, but Cabo Verde triumphed”.

The West African archipelago nation progressed to the knockout stages in its first World Cup, thrilling supporters back home.

In an epic last-32 contest in Miami, Cabo Verde pushed Argentina to the brink.

However, the reigning world champions snatched a 3-2 win in extra time.
