Young people in China have started keeping mango pits as “pets”.
In this new trend, youngsters make “pets” from the sprouting hair of a mango seed. It has shocked mainland social media.
Owners say their fluffy mango pits give them the same joy as a dog or cat, and they feel comfort from these “pets”.
In one case, a 19-year-old university student surnamed Liu has been raising two such pets since May. She is from the northern Chinese city of Tianjin.
Liu has named them Da Mao and Er Mao, or Hairy I and II. She even keeps a “mango pit diary” of the pair on social media. So far, she has posted 11 diary entries about them.
Liu documents how the mango pits’ hair changes texture. It goes from being dry and prickly to something that is “very comfortable to pat”, she said.
