More than 4,000 swimmers welcomed New Year’s Day by diving into freezing waters for the Coney Island Polar Bear Plunge.
Many of them wore quirky costumes such as starfish suits and superhero outfits.

Some believe jumping into cold water on New Year’s Day is a way of saying goodbye to bad things from the past.
