Every week, you’ll find advice from our team of psychologists to help you through all the ups and downs of life.

How do I get my parents to stop comparing me to other people?

It’s tough when your parents compare you to others. It can make you feel upset because they don’t appreciate your efforts. But remember that everyone has different strengths, and you are special just the way you are.

If your parents’ comments make you angry, take a break and do something relaxing.

Once you feel calmer, tell them how you feel. Remind your parents about your skills and goals. Ask them to support you in achieving your dreams. If it’s hard to talk to them alone, ask a sibling or trusted family member to help you. You can also try writing a letter instead.

If these don’t work, it’s not your fault. Your parents might be feeling bad about themselves and taking it out on you. Keep your list of skills and dreams somewhere you can see every day to remind yourself of all the things you are good at.

Talk it out

  • Have you ever felt angry because someone said you weren’t as smart or talented as another classmate or family member?

  • Every person has their own skills and goals. What are yours?
