Sometimes, it feels like everywhere we go, there is always something new to buy. Trends are always changing, from Jellycat toys and surprise boxes to cute stationery and clothes. There is nothing wrong with wanting these things. They might be fun and bring you joy.

But it is important to make sure we do not waste money on things we don’t need. It is good to save money. We should also think about the environment. When we buy too many things, they end up going into the trash.

Think about why you want to buy something. Why do you need it? How will it make you feel? Are you really sure you want it, or do you just want to feel better about yourself? If you buy this, will you need to throw away something else?

It is OK to treat yourself to something special once in a while. You can talk to your father about a plan and ask for his advice.

Perhaps, you can buy something once you’ve finished a tough test at school. Think about the things you already have, and see if any of them are getting old and need to be replaced. Or you could give it away to someone else to make room for your new purchase.

Later, you can check in with him to see how well you’re doing. This will show him that you care about what he thinks.

Talk it out

  • Why do you think people buy things they don’t need?

  • What is something you wanted when you were younger? Do you still use it now?
