The winter holidays are not only about gifts, hot chocolate and a break from school. They are also an opportunity to spend time with those you love, like your family and friends.
One way to better understand love is to learn about the five love languages. These are different ways people show and feel love.
The first love language is words of affirmation. This means saying kind things like “I appreciate you”. The second is quality time, which means spending time together and making moments special, even if you are just playing games or reading a book.
The third love language is receiving gifts. It’s not about expensive presents but the kindness behind a small gift or a handmade card. The fourth love language is acts of service, which means doing helpful things, like cleaning up or making a snack for someone. And the last love language is physical touch. This includes hugs, high-fives and even cuddles. It helps people feel cared for.
Everyone has their own preferred love language: the special way they like to give and receive love. When someone “speaks” our love language, we feel truly loved.
Others may have different love languages, so it’s important to figure out how they feel loved and “speak” their language.
Christmas is a perfect time to try to share love by learning to speak different love languages.
Whether it’s through kind words, a warm hug, a little gift, spending quality time together or helping someone out, every act of love makes the holiday brighter.
Remember, love is the greatest gift we can give and receive in this season and all year round.

How do I like to give and receive care?
Find some paper and make two lists: “Do I like receiving this from others?” and “Do I like giving this to others?” Share an example for each question for each love language to help you better understand how you like to give and receive care.
