Advice: Why are ‘needs’ and ‘wants’ different?

It is important to embrace gratitude for what you have and find happiness in life’s simple moments, not fleeting wants. Photo: Shutterstock

Have you ever been to a toy store and really, really wanted something, only to forget about it a week later? We all know that feeling. It’s easy to think that getting more things will make us happy. But there is a big difference between what we need and what we want, and understanding that difference can help us feel happier every day.

Needs are the things we must have to live and grow. Food, water, a safe home, clothes and love from family and friends – these are needs. Wants are the extras, like a new video game, a fancy pair of shoes or the latest gadget. Wants can be fun, but they are not essential.

The tricky part is that wants never seem to end. As soon as we get one thing, we often start wanting something else. If we keep chasing after more and more, we may never feel satisfied.

Learning to be content with what we already have is like finding a hidden treasure. Being content doesn’t mean we stop dreaming or trying our best. It means we pause to notice the good things already in our lives – a warm meal, a cosy bed or a friend who makes us laugh. When we focus on what we truly need, we realise that we often have enough. Gratitude fills our hearts instead of the endless chase for more.

So the next time you get that “I want it now” feeling, take a deep breath. Ask yourself: is this a need or a want? It’s OK to enjoy wants sometimes, but remember that real happiness doesn’t live inside a new toy. It lives in the simple moments we already have, and in sharing what we have with others.

When we learn to be thankful for enough, we discover that we already have a lot.
