Advice: How can I convince my mum that a number 4 on my sports jersey is not bad luck?

In Chinese, the number four sounds a lot like the word for “death”. Because of this, many Chinese people avoid the number. Photo: Shutterstock

Your mother’s worry about the number four probably comes from a deep cultural belief. That means her not wanting you to use it on a sports jersey is her way of watching out for you.

People rarely change their deep cultural beliefs through logic. Try not to argue with her. Instead, show her you are listening. Tell her you understand why she is worried, even if you do not believe in the superstition yourself.

Then, you can help her look at the situation more calmly, which will lessen her worry.

You can point to other cultures that also think certain numbers bring bad luck. In this case, it is also important to remind her that the coach chooses your jersey number.

Finally, the best way to calm a parent down is to give them a clear plan for the future. Tell her directly that you will be careful and focus on staying safe during the game.

Parents usually worry much less when they know you listened to them and feel sure that you are prepared.

This question was answered by Tiffany Chiu, a child psychotherapist and play and behavioural therapist at Your Relationship Clinic.
