Last month, I went with my class to a beach in Discovery Bay for a beach clean-up.
This activity was arranged by Plastic Free Seas, who showed us how harmful plastic can be to the environment.
They taught us that sea creatures could get tangled up in the plastic in the water or even eat it. As we picked up the rubbish, we sorted it into plastic cutlery, straws, big pieces of plastic, and plastic bottles.
I was disappointed when I saw how many plastic bottles there were. We also saw things like shavers and combs.
We wondered why anyone would want to throw something like that into the sea. We also picked up some tiny plastic pieces.
My best friend and I were very good at finding these tiny pieces called “nurdles”. They were still there after an accident somewhere in the sea.
I hope people will care more about the community and not throw things into the ocean. I also hope that the next time we do a beach clean-up, we will find a lot less rubbish.
