Swiss company turns CO2 into rock

Photo: Captured from Facebook

A company says it has extracted carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and permanently stored it in the ground.

Climeworks was started by two Swiss engineers. The company says its facility in Iceland (in the photo) has successfully removed carbon dioxide from the air and injected it into the ground.

Underground, the gas will very slowly be turned into rock. This method is called "direct air carbon capture".

Last year, the United Nations' Panel on Climate Change warned that we will need to remove more CO2 from the atmosphere. If we don't, the climate could get warmer.

Another way to remove more CO2 from the atmosphere is to plant more trees.
