China's scientists found more water on the moon than expected

There may be more water on the moon than we thought! And most of that water is from the sun, say scientists.

In December 2020, China's Chang'e 5 moon explorer (in the photo) brought 1.73kg of lunar soil back to Earth. It collected it from a huge volcano on the moon.

The water in the moon soil is at least 170 parts per million, or 170 grams per tonne of soil, say the scientists.

The water is made when hydrogen ions from the sun hit the moon's surface and mix with oxygen atoms in the soil.

However, although 170 grams of water per tonne is much higher than we thought, this means it is still as dry as a desert. And this means extracting and using that water would be a very challenging task.
