Scientists watched the aye-aye using its strangely thin, 8cm-long middle finger to deeply pick its nose. It made them think about a larger mystery: why do some animals eat their own snot?

The aye-aye is a strange kind of nocturnal lemur with big ears that is found only in Madagascar.

Now it has been named as the 12th primate which picks its nose.

It joins a group of nose-picking primates that includes gorillas, chimpanzees, macaques – and of course us humans!

Sadly, not many scientists have looked into why some primates do this.

"I think it's just something that people didn't think about because it's thought to be gross," says scientist Anne-Claire Fabre.
