In 1989, something important happened for kids around the world. Leaders of many countries came together and made a promise to protect children and help them grow. They created a treaty called the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The treaty says that anyone under the age of 18 is considered a child. It promises that every kid has the right to be safe, stay healthy, and go to school.

The idea behind the convention is that children are not objects that belong to their parents. They are people too, and they have their own rights that should be respected.

One of the rules says that all children should have the chance to grow, learn, play and develop in a safe and healthy way. Another rule is that no child under the age of 15 can join the army or be part of any war.

The treaty has encouraged governments to change their laws so that more children get healthcare, food and education. It has also helped to protect children from abuse.

However, there are still many kids who are not being protected. Some do not get enough nutritious food to help them grow and be healthy. Others are forced to work in dangerous jobs instead of going to school, or their parents send them to get married at a young age (see graphic). So people around the world are still working hard to ensure all children have a bright future.
