China is one of the world’s oldest civilisations. Its history goes back thousands of years.

Many old Chinese inventions and celebrations are still important today and are used in our daily lives. For example, people still use a compass to find their way when they don’t have a smartphone.

Festivals also have a long history. Lunar New Year traditions have been celebrated by Chinese people for thousands of years.

In the past, when most people in China were farmers, the Lunar New Year was a special time each year when they could take a break from work.
