Difficulty: Explorer (Level 1)
Everyone is connected. All people have a shared humanity – no matter their nationality, culture or religion – and we all live on the same planet.
Part of being a good global citizen is actively addressing the problems our planet and environment face. For example, climate change affects different countries in different ways. Learning about these issues will help you become a responsible member of the international community.
A good global citizen also tries to take care of our planet. One way to do this is through recycling. This way, we help keep the world clean and healthy for all our neighbours, no matter where they live on Earth.
Here are two activities to help you become a good global citizen.

Climate investigations
Ask an adult to help you use the internet. Search online to find three countries affected by each climate threat. Consider how these problems affect the region’s people. On a piece of paper, copy the table below and fill it in.

Learn about recycling materials
Now that you know more about these climate problems, it’s time to take action at home. Recycling and reusing items saves energy and keeps things from going to landfills. Everyone can do their part in reducing carbon emissions.
-
First, set up four stations. You can reuse a shopping bag or a cardboard box for your stations. Label them paper, metals, plastics and food waste.
-
Walk through your home with your family and check your rubbish bins. Discuss if the items could go into one of your stations. If any items can be reused, don’t throw them away!
-
Place the items in the designated stations according to the materials. Ask a grown-up to help you weigh the materials you have collected.
-
Then, go to the Eco Recycling Today website and use their Recycling Carbon Reduction Calculator. In Hong Kong, you can also bring your recycling to one of the government GREEN@COMMUNITY locations. The staff there will weigh your recyclables and help dispose of them properly.
