Diwali, a Hindu festival, is one of the most important celebrations in India because it symbolises the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and good over evil.
Our school held its annual Diwali celebration earlier this month. Children were invited to wear Indian clothes, and the day started with an assembly where we learned about different cultural Diwali celebrations from the Year Six students.
We also watched a video about the story of the festival.
After the assembly, our class made diya holders decorated with marigolds. We even tasted samosas and Indian sweets.
After lunch, we ate more Indian snacks and painted clay diyas. We also had a dance session with volunteer mothers. Then, we decorated our diyas with crystal stickers and heard about the Diwali story.
I learned how different cultures have a unique way of celebrating Diwali. The festival is similar to Lunar New Year because of the family gatherings and decorations.
Overall, I enjoyed the event and am looking forward to it next year!
