I recommend the book Front Desk by Kelly Yang. The book is about a girl called Mia Tang, who moves from China to the US.

A motel owner in Anaheim, California, was looking for an experienced manager. Mia’s mother contacted the motel owner, and fortunately, he was just as enthusiastic. The motel was called Calivista Motel. Although Mia’s parents had no work experience, their new boss, Yao, agreed as long as they both worked.

“One price for two people,” he said when they first met.

They soon began their new career. Since Calivista Motel didn’t have a cleaner, Mia’s parents took on the responsibility of cleaning all the rooms, as they didn’t want their child to handle bleach and other dangerous substances.

Mia helped at the front desk, checking guests in and out of Calivista Motel. However, the small family quickly realised that Yao was not a good person. He took advantage of them by cutting their wages.

Mia was struggling at school, but there was one person who was kind to her: Lupe. They soon discovered that they had a lot in common. Both felt they had to lie about their lives at school to avoid being mocked. Inspired by their shared experiences, Mia dreamed of owning her own motel. Read the book to find out what happens.
