A book I would recommend is A Brush with Magic by Flora Ahn. This wonderful story follows two girls, Yumi and her older sister, Minji.
The girls go to South Korea for the very first time on their summer holiday. They go without their parents and will stay in Seoul with their cousins and family. But once they arrive, Minji goes Korean beauty shopping while Yumi paints with their grandfather.
Then, Yumi finds a magic ink brush and accidentally summons a Dokkaebi, a creature from Korean fairy tales. But while magic is fun, it can make things worse.
The book has many lessons. It reminds us how important it is to stay safe in unfamiliar places and how you might meet new people with whom you do not blend in. It shows how people can be different but also the same.
It teaches us not to tell lies, because they only lead to more lies. It makes us consider how you lie to yourself and play tricks on others that you think are fun.
This book also encourages us to be kind and not let anyone feel left out or without someone to play with. It’s important not to be mean.
A Brush with Magic is an amazing story. It features a lot of fun things, and you will also learn about South Korea and Korean culture with Yumi and Minji.
