As I arrived at camp, I felt a mix of excitement and anxiety.
Our instructor gathered us for an announcement: “We’re tackling the high ropes course. Pick your partner!”
I teamed up with my friend Mathea. My anticipation grew and grew as the instructor secured my harness.
Mathea bounced with excitement, saying, “If we reach the top of this giant ladder, it’ll be an amazing achievement!”
I forced a smile, trying to match her enthusiasm.
I took a deep breath and approached the towering structure. My hands shook as I gripped the wooden beam. Finally, I placed my foot on the rope, struggling as I pulled myself up.
“Just hold my hand,” Mathea urged me.
I grasped her hand and hoisted myself up the ladder.
“Thanks!” I exclaimed as Mathea beamed at me. This was turning out to be quite enjoyable!
However, tension filled the air as we climbed higher; even Mathea was visibly shaken.
“Relax! You’re harnessed. You won’t fall,” I said as she began her ascent.
Yet fear gnawed at me as I struggled to manoeuvre my shoe into a rope hole.
“Mathea! Can you help me?” I called out desperately.
“I can’t! I’m going to fall!” she shouted back in panic.
After what felt like an eternity, I finally secured my shoe but was too exhausted to pull myself up further.
I glanced at the instructor managing my harness. He chuckled softly and began pulling my rope to help me get to the wooden beam.
When I finally reached the top of the ladder, relief washed over me as I took in the breathtaking view – the sun glinting off the leaves below and a flawless blue sky above.
“Your time is up!” my instructor called out. As we descended, Mathea’s radiant smile mirrored mine.
