Do you know how the Rugby Sevens got its name? It is simply because each team has seven players, unlike the 15 in standard rugby.
In April, a group of students from St Antonius Girls’ College visited Kai Tak Sports Park to watch the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.
We had 33 students, including rugby team members, English reporters and physical education (PE) students, accompanied by two teachers. It was my first live rugby competition, making it a truly special and precious experience for me.
After arriving at the sports park, we took our seats in the stands, which gave us a complete view of the pitch and surrounding crowds.
The stadium was full of energy. Hundreds of fans cheered, laughed and celebrated. I found myself cheering excitedly, as if I were at a concert.
All teams taking part showed impressive skills and great sportsmanship. My favourite was the New Zealand team, who displayed the country’s incredible strength. They played excellently and defeated tough opponents such as Australia, Brazil and the USA.
Both the men’s and women’s matches were full of thrilling moments. The tight, intense match between New Zealand and the USA was especially nerve-racking to watch.
I barely knew any rugby rules before this trip, but watching the live games totally changed my understanding of the sport.
I finally learned how rugby works: two teams compete for the ball, sprint across the pitch and chase each other. The goal is to score a try by running to the opponent’s end line and placing the ball on the ground.
This live experience helped me easily understand these rules.
All the games were nail-biting from start to finish. Apart from learning the rules of rugby, the experience helped me truly understand the importance of teamwork, which lies behind every wonderful match. I hope to visit Kai Tak Sports Park again to relive the fantastic atmosphere of live Rugby Sevens games.
