SCMP Learn, the education arm of the South China Morning Post, has launched Stance – a new citywide English storytelling competition designed to encourage students to share their unique perspectives on global issues.

This competition provides young people with a platform to sharpen their writing, public speaking and critical thinking skills. Submit original work on a topic of your choice based on seven themes ranging from technology to social issues and sustainability.

“By blending critical thinking, English storytelling and writing skills, we hope to nurture confident young leaders who can shape tomorrow’s conversations,” said Tammy Tam, editor-in-chief of the South China Morning Post.

This is a chance for students in Forms One to Five or Years Seven to 11 to share their views on a self-selected topic and stand a chance to win some exclusive prizes, including a feature in Hong Kong’s premier student newspaper, Young Post.

The competition will unfold in two parts.

  1. The first phase requires students to submit an original written piece by October 24, 2025. A judging panel of senior editors and academics will shortlist 10 finalists who will proceed to the second phase.

  2. The Grand Finale Showdown, set for January 17, 2026, will take place at the JC Cube in Tai Kwun. Finalists will present ideas live to a panel of judges that includes actress and television host Grace Chan and professional storytelling coach Gary Lo. Each finalist will present their story on stage for eight to 10 minutes, followed by a live question-and-answer session.

“What sets Stance apart is how it equips students to present well-reasoned ideas in a way that truly resonates with others,” said Lo.

Winners will receive cash prizes of up to HK$5,000, be featured in Young Post and gain access to exclusive learning opportunities.

Submissions are currently open. For more information on competition guidelines and themes, please visit the official website.
