Ocean Park will get a new marine mammal conservation centre. The animal theme park in Hong Kong is known for its research on marine mammals and rescue efforts.
The exhibit will open in early 2027.
Visitors can explore many exhibits and see different animals. These include seals and sea lions at Pacific Pier, an attraction inside the Marine World section of the park.
The new centre will replace the North Pole Encounter.
It will have interactive zones and immersive facilities. Visitors can learn about marine life, how animals in the sea behave and what threatens oceans.
The park said visitors will also discover ways to support conservation.
The new centre will display the skeleton of a whale that was found on a beach in July 2023. It was a young Bryde’s whale that had appeared in Hong Kong waters early in the month. The animal measured more than eight metres in length. It started a whale-watching craze with many people booking tours to see the animal.
But by the end of July, it was found dead near Shelter Island in Sai Kung. A large, fast-moving boat had fatally injured its back and spine. The whale was buried, and the bones were collected later and donated to Ocean Park for research purposes.
