Earlier this year, a sculpture of toads was found near the Peruvian city of Caral. The finding helped researchers confirm that an ancient civilisation disappeared because of climate change.
These items were found at the Vichama archaeological site. This ancient city thrived between 1800BC and 1500BC.
Archaeologist Tatiana Abad was the head of research at the site. Abad said the sculpture of the two toads dates back 3,800 years. It symbolises birth and success. It also shows the worship of water and rain after droughts. The toad was a symbol of a crisis these people survived.
Researchers also found figures of skeletal remains on Vichama’s walls. Abad said the figures looked like they did not have enough food. This was likely because climate change affected Caral and other ancient civilisations.
