Egypt has officially opened the Grand Egyptian Museum. It has been described as the world’s largest archaeological museum. It has about 100,000 artefacts that cover 7,000 years of history.
The new museum is huge, spanning 500,000 square metres. It is on a hill overlooking the Great Pyramid of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
At its opening, the audience watched a pretty display of lights and music, with the pyramids towering before them. Performers played traditional music while a laser show lit up the night sky.
The museum’s most exciting exhibit is a collection of all 5,500 items from King Tutankhamun’s tomb. King Tutankhamun was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh.
It is the first time all of these items have been displayed since the tomb was found in 1922.
Egypt hopes the museum will attract tourists and help improve its struggling economy.
